Groovin the Moo16,000 young (and not-so-young) people converged on the Bendigo Showgrounds on Saturday 4th May for what has become an annual event - "Groovin the Moo". A concert of many different groups and bands, under a big-top erected especially for the event, lasting from early afternoon until nearly midnight when noise restrictions kick in.
Strathfieldsaye Lions members park cars of all descriptions until our paddock is overflowing, with many attendees planning on sleeping in their cars as all accommodation for miles around is booked out well in advance of the weekend.
Bottles and cans line the footpath where fans had to line up prior to the gates opening - with alcohol not allowed to be brought in, much was consumed prior to entry.
With a mere $5 carparking fee, it was interesting to note the empty wallets of many of these young people - with them being of uni age, and on restricted incomes, they must have dug deep to afford the entry ticket. Coins were scrounged from gloveboxes and compartments, with some not quite making the full $5. I hope they didn''t need petrol to get home! Or maybe they rely on credit cards, as we seem to be a cashless society these days.
Volunteer ExpoEvery year, local volunteer groups are invited to hold a publicity stall in the Hargreaves St mall, and once again, 4 Lions clubs took up the challenge.
Our marquee was decorated with Lions flags and logos, banners, A-frames and posters. Members from those four clubs were rostered on, to hand out brochures and encourage members of the public to join their local Lions club, and John, Bob, Graeme, Lorna, David & Jill did a great job. Bendigo secretary Maxene produced a brochure, listing contact details and activities of all the zone clubs.
Ross from Maiden Gully-Marong was able to speak live on local radio, Phoenix FM, about activities in which Lions participate in this area.
Legacy Ladies Lunch
Three times annually, Lions clubs in the Bendigo area host a lunch for our local Legacy ladies. On Sunday 14th April, Strathfieldsaye Lions and the Lioness Club of Golden City, Bendigo combined once again to host 32 ladies for a roast lunch at the Maiden Gully-Marong Lions clubrooms.
Nine members plus one wife each collected 2 or 3 ladies and delivered them to the hall, where 2 members from each club produced a delicious lunch of roast beef and vegies, followed by apple slice, custard and cream.
Entertainment throughout the lunch was provided by another Lions member, who brought his portable organ along, and played and sang (who knew Ian could sing that well!!!) all the old songs so loved by our senior ladies.
A free raffle concluded the afternoon, with four ladies taking home either a surprise small gift, or a Lions Christmas cake.
Once again - a great success.

Aaron the Lion (a great hit with the kids) and his two handlers from Bendigo Lions Club at the Easter Parade.
Bendigo Easter Parade Marshalling
Bendigo, Strathfieldsaye and Maiden Gully Marong Lions Clubs combined to assist with marshalling and lining up the floats and bands at the Bendigo Easter Procession.
Vehicles towed a giant Lions Christmas Cake and a giant Lions Mint (on loan from Maryborough Lions).
Also we had Aaron the Lion who tried to shake hands with all the kids along the way. Weather was excellent and the crowds looked like a record.
Wine on the Vine Social outing
Every year, Sebastopol Lions Club holds a Wine on the Vine fundraising day at Wightwicks Winery, just north of Ballarat. Everyone is welcome to enjoy an afternoon of entertainment by 2 local bands, enhanced by gourmet sausages, hamburgers and bruschetta provided by Sebastopol LC.
Members of Strathfieldsaye Lions have supported this fundraiser for the Oncology unit of Ballarat Hospital for a few years now, and enjoyed a great day out.
Australia day BBQ at the Strathfieldsaye shopping centreOnce again, Strathfieldsaye Lions members cooked and served a BBQ breakfast for hundreds of locals from 8.00am on Australia Day. Eggs, bacon, sausages, hamburgers, onions and gallons of sauce were devoured by the hungry hoards, prior to the official welcome by the Scouts.
Lawn Bowls night - November 2012
Hoots of elation and moans of despair filled the air at the Strathfieldsaye Bowling Club recently, when Lions members and partners had a "Come and Try" night.
For those who had bowled before, at least they knew what they were supposed to do.
The rest of us - well - we had a go. And sometimes, beginners luck kicked in, and we won the end. (See - I even know some of the lingo!!)
Mostly though, the pernicketty bowl just went where it wanted to go, which wasn''''''''t anywhere near that little white kitty, way down the other end.
Bowls club members fed us a well-deserved meal afterwards, and awarded the winning team a Bowls Club stubby holder and pen, to the acclamation of the unlucky Lions. We all had a great time though, and who knows - some of us may even join the Bowls Club.

Safe Plate DayAlan Andrews gets down and dirty changing number plate screws to prevent the theft of number plates at the Strathfieldsaye IGA.
Operation Safe Plate is a program introduced by Victoria Police and their community partners to deter thieves from stealing your number plates. This is achieved by removing the existing fixing screws attaching your number plates, and replacing them with one way security screws.
Programs have run throughout Victoria at shopping centers and other venues. Victoria Police are assisted by volunteer community organizations such as Neighborhood Watch, Lions Clubs and others to run the program.

Sutton Grange Tree Planting Day August 01 2010
Photo attached shows Lion Alan Andrews (President) and his wife Lion Bev cooking lunch for the Sutton Grange Lad Care Group who were taking part in National Tree Day. The Land Care Group have for years now planted trees around Sutton Grange, on the slopes of Mt Alexandra and the head-waters of Axe Creek. Each year the Strathfieldsaye Lions support them by cooking lunch. It was wet and windy. This has been typical of the first day of August for the last few years when the Lions have supported the Land Care Group.
For many years Strathfieldsaye have supported either the Sutton Grange or Axe Creek Land Care Groups. Axe Creek runs from Sutton Grange through Strathfieldsaye to join the Campaspe River downstream of Axedale. It was a joy after 12 years of drought in the area to see water running through the paddocks and across the main Bendigo road in many places.
